Dental implants are used to replace missing teeth that are fallen out or have been extracted. Dental implants are most commonly made from titanium or titanium alloy. They are surgically implanted into the jaw bone to function like the root of your missing tooth. The implant is traditionally left to heal in the jaw bone for a period of a few weeks to a few months allowing the bone to firmly fix to the implant. Once stable, the implant is uncover and a restoration often referred to as a crown is placed on top. A metallic post known as abutment is used to screw the restoration into the implant. Once completed, a restored implant looks and functions like a real tooth. Implants are safe aesthetic alternative to non implant supported crowns, bridgework and dentures. Only a dental practitioner can determine whether you are a candidate for dental implant. Certain health conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes and risk factors such as smoking may hinder your ability to undergo implant therapy. At the time appropriate hygiene must be established prior to implant therapy and must be maintained to ensure the long- term success of the implant.

Single tooth restoration is used when one tooth is missing. Depending upon the location of the implant, it may be placed at a slight angle to utilize as much available bone as possible. The implant is left in the jaw bone to heal for several weeks to few months depending upon the bone quality. By applying bone substitute material, the damaged bony wall can be restored. The damaged structure is filled with bone graft which serves as a scaffold for new bone formation. The bone graft is intermingled with new bone after 46 months and is included in the natural remodelling process of the bone. This creates pleasing aesthetic results and ensures that the implant will remain firmly anchored in the jaw bone overtime. Due to the bone regeneration, the implant and crown will fill the function of a strongly anchored artificial tooth with a natural attractive appearance and a radiant smile.

Advantages of Implants:

The implants are decidedly advantageous over other type of fixed bridges or dentures. An implant is independent of adjacent teeth when only one tooth is to be replaced and adjoining teeth are in good health. The implants are also useful in free end saddle cases where bridges have to be given as it not only will provide support to the denture but distribute the chewing load over a wider area as well. Implants definitely improve the function and aesthetics. The biggest advantage of implants is that these are immune to caries. If all the manufacturer’s instructions are adhered and case selection is genuine there are very low chances of failure of implants.


Disadvantages of Implants are very few. Patient is scared of implant as these require an invasive surgical procedure. It is a time consuming and costly affair. The case selection is difficult and lot of precision is required in insertion of dental implant. In spite of the best efforts in best of the hands failure does occur which is a very embarrassing situation for the implantologist. Patient is supposed to maintain an excellent oral health for longevity of implants.
